ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland volleyball team officially kicks off the 2012 season at the Varney's Invitational hosted by Kansas State at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kan. this weekend. The Golden Grizzlies begin their 2012 campaign against Oregon State on Friday at 6 p.m. ET. OU will also take on preseason No. 22 KSU on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. ET and UC Irvine at 6 p.m. ET.
Tournament Notes
- The Golden Grizzlies are coming off their most successful season, winning a school record 18 matches and reaching their first Summit League Tournament
- Oakland finished 2011 ranked third in the nation in digs per set
- Senior Meghan Bray is only 28 kills away from setting the school's all-time record
- Bray finished the Black and Gold scrimmage with 24 kills and 14 digs
- Senior Alli Kirk was ranked 22nd in the NCAA in digs per set
- Kirk earned a match-high 33 digs at the Black and Gold Scrimmage
- Senior Brittany Holbrook finished last season tops on the team with a .260 hitting percentage
- Holbrook had a match-high 26 kills and a .431 hitting percentage last weekend at the Black and Gold Scrimmage
- Junior Alissa Valentine led the Golden Grizzlies with 681 assists last season
- Sophomore Taylor Humm returns after earning Summit League All-Freshman Team honors in 2011
