Complete 2012 Volleyball Schedule

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland volleyball team released its 2012 schedule on Friday, announced head coach Rob Beam. The team will start the home schedule by hosting the Golden Grizzlies Invitational inside the Athletics Center O'rena on Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

"I am extremely excited about our 2012 schedule," said Beam. "This is one of the most demanding schedules from a level of play standpoint that we have had. However, that means there is tremendous opportunity for our program to continue to grow."

The Golden Grizzlies will begin the season on the road in a challenging non-conference tournament at the Kansas State Tournament on Aug. 24-25, taking on Oregon State, California-Irvine, and KSU, who finished 2011 ranked No. 22 in the AVCA coaches' poll. OU will then travel to the Cleveland State Invitational on Sept. 7-8 where they will take on CSU, Eastern Kentucky, Buffalo and MAC Tournament Champion Central Michigan.

"We will be tested early by our non-conference schedule in that we play three BCS institutions, including a match at No. 22 Kansas State and a home match in the O'rena versus Iowa," said Beam. "We also have five matches against MAC teams, including MAC Tournament Champion, Central Michigan. The MAC earned four total bids to the NCAA Tournament last season, so scheduling these should help us prepare for Summit League play."

The Golden Grizzlies Invitational opens on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. with a match against Toledo. The Black and Gold will face Eastern Illinois on Saturday at noon and end the tournament against Iowa at 7 p.m. The Golden Grizzlies will look to repeat the success from last year when they won the Golden Grizzlies Invitational over Central Michigan and Wright State.

OU will play North Dakota State at home on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and host The Black Out in hopes of breaking the 1,000 fan mark in the O'rena. The following day Oakland will celebrate past Golden Grizzlies during Alumni Night between sets of the match against South Dakota State. The Golden Grizzlies will also host the annual Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. against UMKC. The team will wear pink during the charity event in an effort to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research, and OU fans are encouraged to do the same.

The Golden Grizzlies will end the season at home on Senior Night against Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. The Mavericks will make their first appearance in the O'rena during their first year in The Summit League.

"It will be an exciting year in the Summit League. In 2011, the League was ranked 13th out of 32 total conferences, and I think there is a good chance we can collectively be even stronger," said Beam.

Last season, the Golden Grizzlies made their first postseason tournament appearance since going to Division I, finishing tied for third before falling to Summit League champion North Dakota State in the semifinals. Oakland returns All-Summit League first team selection Meghan Bray and Summit League All-Freshmen team selection Taylor Humm to a team that finished third in the country in digs per set.
