Golden Grizzlies Knock Off UMKC 3-1|

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Meghan Bray had 15 kills and 24 digs and Ashley Nevelle had 33 assists as the Oakland volleyball team (16-10, 10-6) beat UMKC (11-16, 5-11) in four sets in the Swinney Recreation Center Saturday afternoon. Oakland won with set scores of 16-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-22.
"This was a big win for us against one of the hottest teams in the league," said head coach Rob Beam. "We had to play very well and make a lot of adjustments throughout the match. I think our setters did a great job of creating points in side out to close out the last three sets."
Five Golden Grizzlies had double-digit digs including Alli Kirk with 17 and Taylor Humm and Becca Means both added 14. Bray led the front line followed by Humm with 13 kills and Allison Bell with nine kills. Alissa Valentine added 12 assists and 12 digs in the match.
UMKC started off the match strong, winning seven out of the first eight points and won the first set 25-16 behind a strong defensive performance as they hold the Golden Grizzlies to a .054 hitting percentage. Oakland fought back in the second set as two service aces by Bell put OU up early and Humm finished the set with three straight kills to tie the match.
The Kangaroos were in control of the third set, leading 20-16 late in the set. The Golden Grizzlies turned on the defense after that holding UMKC to a .055 hitting percentage in the set and went on to win nine out of the last 12 points for the 25-23 victory. In the final set, Oakland had their best offensive game of the afternoon as they earned 16 kills with only one hitting error as Bray earned seven out of her 15 kills in the set for the 25-22 win.
Oakland will be in action next weekend as they will host the last home matches of the season in the Athletics Center O'rena. OU will face IUPUI on Friday starting at 7 p.m. and Western Illinois on Saturday starting at 5 p.m. on Senior Night.
