BROOKINGS, S.D. - Alli Kirk finished with 33 digs and Meghan Bray recorded 19 kills and 16 digs as the Oakland volleyball team (13-11, 6-6 Summit) fell to South Dakota State (15-9, 7-5 Summit) in four sets Friday night at Frost Arena. The Golden Grizzlies lost with set scores of 19-25, 25-17, 21-25 and 21-25.
"Tonight we did not capitalize on the momentum we built heading into intermission," said head coach Rob Beam. "We needed to make a few more plays at key times. On an individual note, Alli Kirk put forward a special match defensively and Brittany Holbrook scored well in a matchup of two of the top middles in the league."
Kirk finished with her fourth 30-plus dig effort of the season and Bray earned her 17th double-double of the season. Brittany Holbrook finished with 14 kills with a .343 hitting percentage while Taylor Humm recorded 12 kills and 17 digs. Alissa Valentine had 21 assists and added 11 digs and Ciara Schultz finished with 21 assists.
In the first set, both teams battled for momentum as the teams were tied at 14-14. The Jackrabbits would use two separate runs of four points to grab the lead as they held Oakland to only 10 kills and 10 hitting errors to earn a 25-19 set win. The Golden Grizzlies jumped out early in the second set as they went on a seven-point run to go up 12-5. Oakland would use the momentum as Bray recorded six kills and Kirk finished with 14 digs in the set to win 25-17 and tie that match at 1-1.
To start the third set, OU once again grabbed the early lead with a five-point run behind two kills by Holbrook to lead 9-5. South Dakota State would use a six-point run of its own to come back and fight to tie the match at 18-18. SDSU would win seven out of the next 10 points as Kelli Fiegen recorded the final two kills to win 25-21.
Oakland won the first four points of the fourth set with four straight kills, but the Jackrabbits would go on a run winning 12 out of 15 points to lead 21-13. The Golden Grizzlies battled back late as Holbrook earned three straight kills but SDSU would hold on to the lead and win the match with a 25-21 set victory.
Oakland will be on the court tomorrow as they travel to North Dakota State to take on the Bison in a critical Summit League matchup in the Benston Bunker Fieldhouse starting at 8 p.m. ET.
