blank Bob Hurdle![]()
Bob Hurdle took a fledgling volleyball program at Oakland that was only six years old and turned it into one of the top programs in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the 1980s. He left the program after the 1992 season with school records for wins (248) and years coached (11), both of which still stand at the time of his induction into the Hall of Honor. In just three seasons Hurdle took the OU volleyball team to its first GLIAC championship in 1985 when Oakland set a school record for wins with a 33-10 record. That season started a streak in which Oakland finished among the top three in the league five times in eight seasons, winning 20+ matches on six occasions. Oakland won its second GLIAC title with a remarkable 15-1 record in 1988. During Hurdle's 11 seasons at OU his teams reached the 20-win mark eight times. Hurdle coached some of the best players in the GLIAC during his time with the team, including the 1988 Player of the Year and Oakland's all-time leader in kills, Tracey Jones. Under his guidance a total of 14 difference players were selected as All-GLIAC team members 23 times. Four players under Hurdle earned all-region distinction. A number of Oakland's all-time statistical leaders played under Hurdle, including the record holders for games played, kills, aces and blocks. In 1985 Hurdle's squad led the nation in aces when Oakland set its school record of 479. |
