Oakland Drops Season Finale 3-2 in Nine Innings to South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Junior Kelsey Krych had two hits, sophomore Abbie Richardson had two hits and recorded 18 putouts and senior Alison Tansel gave up just one unearned run as the Oakland University softball team (17-29, 8-16 Summit) lost 3-2 in 9 innings to South Dakota State (13-41, 9-15 Summit) Saturday afternoon at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. Oakland has finished the 2011 season. "I thought we battled today," said head coach LaDonia Hughes. "Alison (Tansel) threw a good game today. We didn't execute when we had runners in scoring position late in the game. All-in-all it was a good season. The girls know what to expect so I believe we will be better next season." In the first inning for South Dakota State, Ashley Durazo reached on an error and moved to third on two ground outs. Tina Winter singled to left center field to score Durazo. In the second inning, Krista Honken and Greta Stroh singled and moved a base each on a sacrifice bunt. The Golden Grizzlies got two ground outs to end the inning. In the third for Oakland, freshman Shelby Gott reached on an error and moved to third on two ground outs. The Jackrabbits got a strikeout to keep Gott from scoring. In the top of the fifth, sophomore Abbie Richardson broke up the no-hitter with a single to left field. Freshman Chelsea Carena came in to run and moved to second a ground out. SDSU got a strike out and a ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Pam Nicholson singled, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Oakland then turned a double play to get out of the inning.
In the sixth, junior Kelsey Krych laid down a bunt single and stole second. Freshman Erika Polidori then sent the ball over the left field fence to make it 2-1. In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Marlee Petersen hit a solo shot to make it 2-2. In the top of the seventh, junior Colleen Zimmerman ripped a triple down the right field line. South Dakota State got a strike out and a pop up to end the threat. In the eighth, with one out, Krych singled up the middle. The Jackrabbits turned a double play to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Greta Stroh reached on an error and moved to third on a single by Tina Winter. A single up the middle by Nicholson scored Stroh to end the game. For Oakland, Krych and Richardson had two hits each while Polidori had a two-run home run. Richardson also recorded 18 putouts, one shy of the school record. Senior Alison Tansel (3-10) gave up nine hits, three runs, one earned and struck out two in 8.2 innings. For South Dakota State, Honken and Nicholson had two hits each. Nicholson (7-21) gave up six hits, two runs and struck out four in nine innings. -OAKLAND- |
