Glenn MacDonald enters his ninth season as a part of the Oakland softball program and his fifth as the squad's head coach. MacDonald started with the program in the summer of 2001 as an assistant and had a hand in the Golden Grizzlies' back-to-back Summit League Championships in 2002 and '03. Now as the head coach, MacDonald became the program's all-time winningest coach in a win over Erskine College this past season and now sits at 88. He guided the Golden Grizzlies to their third .500 or better conference season in the last four years, missing the tournament by one game. The 2006 Summit League Coach of the Year, MacDonald's teams have made trips to the league tournament in 2 of 4 seasons. In 2009, OU bounced back from its poorest season under the MacDonald regime by going 24-27 and 12-11 in Summit League play. Oakland won five league series, including defeating No. 3 seed Centenary College (2-1) and No. 4 seed Southern Utah (2-1) at home. The Grizzlies posted an 11-4 mark at the OU Softball Field, the second best winning percentage (.733) in school history. Seniors Julie Owen and Jessica Granger were named to the All-Summit League teams. Owen led the league with a .408 batting average and earned first team accolades, while Granger finished second in the league with 195 strikeouts and garnered second team honors. MacDonald led the Golden Grizzlies to the Summit League Championship game in 2007, falling to Southern Utah, 5-1. Oakland made its second consecutive trip to the tournament under his guidance and posted a 10-8 mark in the league, finishing the regular season in third place. The Grizzlies finished the year with an overall mark of 21-36 and had three players garner all-conference recognition in Granger (first team), Owen (second team) and Katie Dreyer (second team). Oakland continued to play a difficult non-conference schedule under MacDonald's tutelage. The Golden Grizzlies faced four nationally-ranked teams, including then-No. 1 Tennessee, three of which finished the year ranked in the final top 25 poll (No. 2 Tennessee, No. 19 Georgia Tech, No. 23 Ohio State). In his first season as the Golden Grizzly head coach, MacDonald led the squad back to the league tournament for the first time in two years and was named Summit League Coach of the Year. He guided OU to a record of 28-31 overall and a 12-12 mark in league action. MacDonald came to OU from Academy of the Sacred Heart where he was named Coach of the Year for two straight seasons and won two consecutive Catholic League championships. The Farmington Hills resident led Sacred Heart to its best seasons ever with a 48-10 league record over three years. MacDonald finished with a 59-28 mark. Prior to working with Sacred Heart, he served as head softball coach at Lahser High School and Andover High School in Bloomfield Hills. He is married to Dorothy MacDonald and they have five sons and two daughters, along with 14 grand children. Their youngest son, Scott, is the Director of Athletic Communications at Oakland University. MacDonald's Year-by-Year Results
