Monique Johnson has been named the new Oakland University assistant softball coach as announced by head coach LaDonia Hughes on Thursday. Johnson, who has experience at the collegiate and international levels, will assist the program with recruiting, working with infielders and assisting with hitting. "Coach Johnson will be a great addition to our team this season," said Hughes. "She will bring positive energy and a relentless work ethic that will help us excel this season. She will also help in teaching our players to become students and leaders of the game we all love." Johnson was a standout player at Florida International University where she was a two-time Sun Belt All-Conference honoree. She was named team captain in her senior season where she led the Golden Panthers to a fourth place finish in the Sun Belt with a 13-13 record in conference play. She was also named Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year in 2007 and holds the career and season home run records in only two years at FIU. Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in marketing from Florida International University. Johnson started her collegiate career at Daytona State College where she twice earned all-conference honors and was named the team's Player of the Year and Best Defensive Player . She was also selected to the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region VII All-Tournament Teams. She earned an associate degree in communications from Daytona State College. Following her collegiate career, Johnson began coaching at the high school level. In 2010, she was the head softball coach at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Fla. In 2009, she was the assistant coach at Episcopal High School. She has been a softball instructor at Game On Softball in Jacksonville, Fla. since 2009, where she instructed teams and individuals of all ages. Johnson played internationally in 2009 with the Gryphons in Rosmalen, Netherlands. |
