ROCHESTER, Mich. - After winning The Summit League Championship in 2011 and advancing to a sixth NCAA Tournament in school history, the Oakland women's soccer team is ready to head back onto the field for the 2012 season. Coach Nick O'Sheais excited about his team, which will begin play with an exhibition match against Cleveland State on Thursday at Krenzler Field at 3 p.m.
"I've been the head coach here for 19 years now and this is the most excited I've been about a team to start the season," said head O'Shea. "We have a great mix of talented returning and incoming players and all of our players are fit and healthy at this point in the season."
The Golden Grizzlies return seven starters from last year's team and five All-Summit League players. In total 23 players are back after facing Wake Forest in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament.
"I think that we have a lot of players who went to the tournament last season and are hungry to get back," said O'Shea. "As a team we've been preparing for this season ever since the final game of last season."
Oakland and Cleveland State also played in preseason exhibition last season. The Vikings finished fourth in the Horizon League last season, posting a program-record 10 wins.
