Oakland Upends Western Illinois, 1-0, at Summit League Tournament|
Nov. 2, 2012
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Kyla Kellermann scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute and Shannon Coley made five saves to lead top-seeded Oakland (10-5-3) to a 1-0 victory over No. 4 seed Western Illinois (13-6) in the semifinals of The Summit League Women's Soccer tournament on Friday at Fishback Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies advance to the title game on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
"It's about time we got a set-play goal to win a game," said OU coach Nick O'Shea. "We haven't been on the good side of set plays a lot this year.
"(Shannon) Coley did everything she needed to do and made one great save where they got in behind us. Our midfielders never stopped running and our defense limited them to long-range shots."
After a scoreless first half, the Golden Grizzlies applied pressure early in the second half and were rewarded with a free kick just outside the top of the box. Kellerman made the most of that opportunity, burying the shot in the top of the net for her ninth goal of the season.
Coley made that one goal stand for Oakland. The senior goalkeeper earned her seventh shutout of the season and the defense held the Leathernecks to just five shots in that second half, after seeing 12 of them in the opening 45 minutes.
"A lot of credit to our defense for limiting quality opportunities for Western Illinois in the game," said O'Shea. "JB (Julianne Boyle) just never stopped running, Katrina Stencel was all over the place, along with Abbey (Abigail Haelewyn). Our midfielders did a phenomenal job."
The Golden Grizzlies advance to their 10th league tournament championship game and will face the winner of No. 2 seed Fort Wayne and No. 3 seed North Dakota State.
