PONTIAC, Mich. - Junior Shannon Doyle scored the match-winner, as the Oakland women's soccer team (9-5-2, 5-0-1) used a pair of first-half goals to earn a 2-0 victory over IUPUI (8-9, 4-3) in Summit League action at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas on Friday night. With the win, the Golden Grizzlies remain at the top of The Summit League standings with an undefeated league record, even on points with only Western Illinois.

"It was a great win," said Oakland head coach Nick O'Shea. "Overall I think that we limited their chances and created a number of chances for ourselves, especially in the first half."

Doyle put Oakland ahead in the fourth minute, when she linked up with sophomore Marlen Knoph. From her wide-right position, Doyle played the ball into Knoph who played Doyle in behind the defense with the return pass. Unmarked, the junior midfielder calmly slotted the ball under the on-rushing IUPUI goalkeeper to put OU ahead.

Oakland should have added to its lead in the sixth minute when sophomore Nicole DeLuca set up Knoph with an empty goal mouth. However, when the ball came to Knoph she smashed her shot against the crossbar and out.

Oakland did eventually double the lead in the 40th minute on a goal from freshman Meghan Reynolds. From a corner kick, junior Jessica Conrad rose above the crowd to turn a header on goal. Her shot hit the crossbar but came back to freshman Serena San Cartier who headed the ball to Reynolds who scored on the open goal.

The Oakland defense was smothering in the first half and did not allow a shot on goal. The best chance for the Jags' came when Chelsi McHenry played a through-ball to Megan Hock. However, freshman goalkeeper Payj O'Shea was quick off her line and prevented Hock from getting off a shot.

Oakland had the majority of the chances in the match with an 18-10 edge in shots and a 5-2 lead in shots on goal. The starting goalkeeper for IUPUI, Giselle Guzman had one save, before being replaced at the start of the second half by Kristin Haseley, who made two saves in the second half. O'Shea had two second-half saves to record her second shutout of the year. The freshman goalkeeper has not conceded in her collegiate career, which spans over 295 minutes of play.

The Golden Grizzlies were unbeaten in the three matches played at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas this season. Oakland tied Detroit 2-2 on Sept. 12 to begin the team's eight-match unbeaten streak. OU was 2-0-1, including a pair of Summit League victories, at the venue.

Oakland is tied for first place in The Summit League with Western Illinois, after the Leathernecks picked up a 1-0 win in double-overtime against IPFW on Friday. Both teams have 15 points, but OU has played on less match.

Oakland will host Western Illinois on Sunday at the OU Soccer Field at 1 p.m. The winner will gain the outright lead in The Summit League. Admission to the match is free to the general public. For fans unable to attend the match, live stats will be available on OUGrizzlies.com.
