ROCHESTER, Mich. - Nicole DeLuca's penalty kick goal was the match-winner, as Oakland scored a 5-1 victory over Valparaiso in an exhibition match on Saturday at the OU Soccer Field. Five different players found the back of the net for the Golden.

"Today was a great day and scoring five goals is awesome," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "Valparaiso is a good team and the first part of the game was tough, but our team kept working hard and eventually took over the game in the second half."

Oakland scored four of the five goals in a dominant second half effort that saw the Golden Grizzlies out shoot Valparaiso 10-4. DeLuca opened the second-half scoring by firing home a penalty kick less than a minute into the second half. Marlen Knoph made it 3-0 for Oakland when she poked home a ball from a yard out following a goal-line scramble in the 60th minute.

The Crusaders responded with a long-distance goal from Rachel Hoaglin in the 69th minute to make it 3-1, but Oakland continued to press forward. The Golden Grizzlies finished the match with a 19-10 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Jordan Penz headed home a cross from Julianne Boyle in the 73rd minute to make it 4-1. Just minutes later Erin Ring passed the ball to an open Meghan Reynolds who placed her shot just inside the far post for the fifth and final goal.

Alyssa Fulton put Oakland in front in the first half with good shot that went in at the far post in the 31st minute. Kristen Steffes picked up and assist on the goal, with her pass that found Fulton open in space.  The goal shifted momentum in favor of OU after Valparaiso had hit the crossbar with a shot earlier in half.

Goalkeeper Payj O'Shea had a diving save in the first half and finished with two saves. Starting goalkeeper Kristen Manski had two saves for Valpo, while Sarah Silvasi came on in the second half and made one save.

Oakland will open the regular season on Friday with a match against Rochester College at the OU Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
