Sept. 23, 2012
YORKTOWN, Ind. - Alanna Gerber shot a final round 75 and Kassandra Komma carded a 79 to lead the Oakland women's golf team to a fifth-place finish (637/+61) at the Cardinal Classic on Sunday at The Players Club. Komma finished in a tie for 16th place with an overall score of 156 (+12).
"Two timely bounce back rounds for Alanna (Gerber)and Jackie (Richert)," said OU coach Russ Cunningham. "Brandi (Studer) was most valuable player this weekend after suffering an injury prior to our first round and was still able to find a way to post two inspiring rounds."
Ball State won its own tournament with an overall score of 611 (+35), eight shots clear of Western Michigan. Marshall's Korakot Simsiriwong captured medalist honors after winning the first playoff hole over BSU's Jenna Hague. Both players finished with a score of 151 (+7).
Gerber was able to improve nine shots from her first to second round and finished the tournament in a tie for 22nd place (159/+15). Jackie Richert improved seven shots on the second day and tallied a round of 80. Brandi Studer also shot 80 in her final round to post a score of 167 (T44).
"As a team, our ball striking should have resulted in better scores," said Cunningham. "Although it was our low round of the fall, we have a lot of work to do. Most of the shots we gave away came from around the greens, so after three consecutive events to start the season, we can now work on skill development the next few weeks in preparation for our final tournament this fall."
The Golden Grizzlies will take off a month before competing in their final fall tournament at the UD Invitational. The event will take place in Dayton at the NCR Country Club.
