Oakland Concludes Day One of Redbird Invitational
Senior Alanna Gerber shot a team-low 75 in Round 2.
NORMAL, Ill. - Alanna Gerber posted a team-low 75 (+3) in the second round to finish in a tie for 17th place (154/+10) to lead the Oakland women's golf team on day one of the Redbird Invitational on Saturday at Weibring Golf Club. The Golden Grizzlies tallied a score of 649 (327-322/+73) and are currently in 12th place.
"Alanna (Gerber) ended the day much better than I expected after tweaking her wrist halfway through the first round," said OU coach Russ Cunningham. "She battled back with a solid second round."
Toledo shot 610 (+34) in the first day to take the 36-hole lead. The Rockets are three shots ahead of Bowling Green (613) and five ahead of tournament host Illinois State (615).
"There is more talent on this team than what our score showed today," said Cunningham. "If we keep improving each round, then it won't take long for us to get comfortable playing to our potential."
ISU's Katie Jean stormed into the lead with a 2-under-par 70 in her opening round and carded an overall score of 145. Jean is three shots ahead of Bradley's Thea Hedemann and five clear of UT's Allison Schultz.
The Golden Grizzlies are trailing Summit League foe Western Illinois by six shots, and lead South Dakota State by seven. The third and final round of the Redbird Invitational will get underway on Sunday morning. The action can be followed live here.
