Kathy Hewelt was instrumental in bringing recognition to the Oakland University women's basketball program. The school's first recognized star, Hewelt scored an all-time high of 988 points during her career. She was selected to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team and was an All-State Division I AIAW selection in both basketball and softball. She was nominated for the Kodak All-American Basketball Team in 1979. She captained both the basketball and softball teams for four years.

Hewelt was a member of a United States basketball team that toured Mexico in 1978, and had tryouts for the World University Games Team and United States National Team. A Dean's List Student, she was named to the GLIAC Scholar of the Year in 1978-79.
