ELMHURST, Ill. -- Oakland's John DeLeon was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It is the first time the sophomore defender from Novi, Mich. has earned the award this season and the second time in his career. In addition to the league award, he was also named Summit League Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com.

DeLeon scored a golden-goal winner in the 92nd minute to clinch a 2-1 win for the Golden Grizzlies against Omaha on Sunday. It was an important goal that kept Oakland tied for first place in The Summit League standings heading into the final weekend of the season.

Defensively, DeLeon made a big contribution as Oakland limited Omaha to just three shots on goal throughout the match. This feat was accomplished despite being reduced to just 10 players for the final 22 minutes of the match.

DeLeon and the Golden Grizzlies host Eastern Illinois this weekend at the OU Soccer Field at 7 p.m. It is the final match of the regular season, and will serve as Senior Night, an opportunity to recognize the team's four seniors.
