June 22, 2012
ROCHESTER, Mich. – A home match against Michigan State is one of the highlights of the 2012 Oakland men’s soccer schedule, announced by head coach Eric Pogue on Friday. The Golden Grizzlies will face three teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament.
The Black and Gold will play 10 matches in the state of Michigan, including eight at the OU Soccer Field in 2012. Oakland opens the regular season with consecutive home matches against New Hampshire (Aug. 24), Cleveland State (Aug. 31) and Vermont (Sept. 2). OU also hosts Duquesne (Sept. 26) and Michigan State (Oct. 17) at home in non-league action.
Known for tough scheduling, the Golden Grizzlies have also picked up some challenging road matches outside of league action. The team will play away to West Virginia (Sept. 9), a team that advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season. OU will also take on SMU (Sept. 14) and Tulsa (Sept. 16) at the SMU Classic in Dallas.
Oakland will have a pair of nearby road matches this season. The Golden Grizzlies play at Michigan (Oct. 9) and at Detroit (Oct. 3), in matches that will feature some of the top soccer talent in the area.
In addition to the challenging non-league schedule, OU will once again face a tough slate of Summit League opponents, including a home match against defending league champions Western Illinois (Sept. 29). OU also hosts UMKC and Eastern Illinois at home this season.
The Golden Grizzlies will start league play with a road test at Oral Roberts (Sept. 22). OU also plays away league matches at IUPUI (Oct. 6), IPFW (Oct. 20) and league newcomers Nebraska-Omaha (Oct. 28).
To prepare for the tough season, the team will play a pair of exhibition matches at home against Valparaiso (Aug. 13) and Bowling Green (Aug. 17). The final exhibition match will be played at Butler (Aug. 19).
Oakland finished the 2011 regular season with back-to-back shutout wins to earn a 12th appearance in The Summit League Championships over the last 13 seasons. The Golden Grizzlies are a storied program that has won 11 league titles and made five NCAA Tournament appearances.
