INDIANAPOLIS-- Joey Tinnion scored two goals to lead Oakland (8-3, 3-0) to a 3-0 win at IUPUI (4-8-2, 1-2) on Saturday at Carroll Stadium to remain unbeaten in Summit League play. The Golden Grizzlies had a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.
"It was a typical, hard-fought Summit League road match and we were proud to come away with a win," said Oakland head coach Eric Pogue. "IUPUI brought a lot of energy, grit and fight but we wore them down in the second half and had some great finishes from Joey Tinnion and Kyle Bethel."
Tinnion gave Oakland the lead in the 40th minute. He was able to finish from 12 yards out on an assist from Bethel. It was the 10th assist of the season for Bethel who leads The Summit League and is among the top five nationally in assists and assists per-game.
Bethel then made it 2-0 for the Golden Grizzlies when he scored in the 65th minute. Matt Dudley slipped the ball to Bethel who finished his breakaway chance for his fourth goal of the season.
Tinnion added another goal in the 84th minute on a two-against-one breakaway combination with Gavin Hoy. Tinnion finished at the near post for his fifth goal in the last three matches. The Golden Grizzlies have now outscored Summit League opponents 13-1 through the first three matches of the year.
For OU, Scott Messer made five saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season. The Jags outshot the Golden Grizzlies 18-12, but had fewer shots on goal thanks to a strong effort by the OU defense.
Oakland is back in action on Tuesday with a match at Michigan. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
