One of Oakland's top defenders during his playing years at OU, Derek Williford was the ninth Oakland men's soccer player to gain All-America honors. He earned the distinction as a senior and team captain in 1992 when he helped OU to a school record for wins and a berth in the NCAA Tournament semi-finals. Also a top playmaker on the team, Williford set a school record when he handed out five assists in a game during the 1990 season. His total of 13 assists that season also rank among Oakland's all-time best. After his collegiate career Williford went on to play professionally, gaining a roster spot with the Detroit Neon of the CISL in 1994. A native of Livonia, Michigan, Williford graduated from Oakland in 1993 with a degree in general studies. He currently resides in Redford, Michigan and is a middle school teacher. He has also continued his soccer career as a coach; spending 17 years coaching in the youth ranks in the area. |
