One of the top all-around players in Oakland University soccer history was John Stewart. John played stopper, sweeper, and center midfield in his four seasons at Oakland, and was just the second player in school history to be named All-American.

John was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American teams as a junior and senior in 1987 and 1988. He earned All-Region honors in both of those years as well as in 1986. John recorded 12 assists as a senior in 1988, the sixth one best season total in school history. John also had career-highs of seven goals and 27 points that season, and for his career had 13 goals and 26 assists for 52 points.

An outstanding defensive player and field general, John was a member of two national semi-final teams, including the 1986 team that advanced to the national finals. He was also a part of the 1988 national semi-final squad. Following that season John became the sixth Pioneer selected to participate in the Senior Bowl.

John, who played professionally in the Canadian Soccer League, earned a bachelor of science degree in Human Resource Development from Oakland. He currently manages a luggage store, is involved in coaching soccer on the youth level, and is engaged to be married this July.
