OU Completes First Year Of Official Division I Play

The Golden Grizzlies started the year out at home with a 5-0 victory over Detroit on September 1. Jeppe Lagerbohm scored two goals for Oakland, as teammates Inge Pederson, Mike Dodd, and Paul Snape also contributed in the goal scoring. Goalkeeper Mike Skolnik had three saves for OU.

ActionSnape.jpg (25900 bytes)After playing to a scoreless tie at Dayton on September 5, the Golden Grizzlies won seven out of the next eight games starting with a 2-1 victory in overtime against Fresno State (9/13). Pedersen and Snape scored the Oakland goals as the Golden Grizzlies pulled out a hard fought victory.

On September 12 the Golden Grizzlies dropped a game to Stanford 4-0. Stanford finished second in the nation in 1998.

OU defeated Xavier at home 2-0 September 18. Halvorsen and Snape tallied the two goals for the Golden Grizzlies.

The Golden Grizzlies next victim was Central Florida. OU defeated the Golden Knights 4-0. Lagerbohm was on fire the entire day scoring three goals for Oakland as the Golden Grizzlies breezed by for their fourth victory of the season. Pedersen also added a goal in the win.

Against Eastern Michigan, Pederson, Halvorsen, Tommy Sand, and Ron Mashni all scored goals as goalkeeper Skolnik recorded two saves in the victory.

Against Akron, Snape scored two goals for the Golden Grizzlies as OU defeated the Zips 3-0. Halvorsen also added a goal as OU earned its sixth victory of the season.

The Golden Grizzlies’ success continued against Butler on October 1, winning a close one, 1-0. Lagerbohm provided the scoring as goalkeeper Skolnik recorded three saves in the game.

Oakland picked up its sixth straight victory at Western Illinois on October 4, winning 4-0. Snape scored two goals for OU, as Dodd and Halvorsen each added one.

In the latter part of the season the team struggled somewhat. The Golden Grizzlies went 3-5-1 in their last nine games.

The Golden Grizzlies fell to Michigan State October 6 in East Lansing, 3-0.

Oakland improved to 9-2-1 with a 3-0 victory October 9 against Oral Roberts. Snape scored the game winner for the Golden Grizzlies.

The next game for OU resulted in a 0-0 tie with the Western Michigan Broncos October 13.

Oakland lost at Valparaiso (10/16) 2-1 in overtime. Adam Heinemann scored OU’s only goal in the first half and Skolnik recorded five saves.

On October 20 the Golden Grizzlies, at home, earned their 10th victory of the season defeating Marquette 3-0. Pederson scored one goal and Halvorsen added two. Scholnik, as goalkeeper, earned his eighth shutout victory of the season.

The Golden Grizzlies fell in overtime to UMKC 2-1 October 23 and Pedersen scored OU’s only goal.

The Golden Grizzlies 11th and final victory of the season was a tough one downing Bowling Green (10/27) on the road, 1-0. Pederson, once again, was the lone scorer in the game, as Anthonsen recorded the assist.

IUPUI and OU met one final time in 1999 in the Mid-Continent Conference championship in Indianapolis. Oakland was defeated by the Jaguars 2-0.

Numerous players contributed to the Golden Grizzlies success in 1999. Snape led the team with nine goals and seven assists, and following him was Pederson with seven goals and five assists. Goalkeeper Mike Skolnik recorded nine shutout victories, started all 19 games and allowed 16 goals, with a .810 save percentage.

Following his senior season, defender Mike Dodd (Omaha, Nebraska) was selected as one of 80 seniors to participate in the Umbro All-Star Classic February 3-6, 2000, at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dodd and Snape were also honored as they were chosen to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Midwest soccer teams.

Skolnik, Anthonsen, Snape, Pedersen, Sand and Dodd were all named first team all-Mid-Continent Conference following the 1999 season.
