GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Former Oakland shortstop, DJ Jarrad, was recently optioned to the Great Falls Voyagers an affiliate member of the Chicago White Sox organization. The team competes in the Pioneer League an advanced rookie ball league.

"I'm really excited for this opportunity," said Jarrad. "Signing as a free agent I wasn't really sure what to expect coming into spring training. So it's a bit of a weight off my shoulders to be signed. I am really excited to start the season."

Jarrad played in 155 games for the Black and Gold in his four-year career. He hit .304 as senior and led the team with 33 RBIs. Jarrad ranks in the top 10 at Oakland in triples in a season and a career. He also ranks in the schools top five for single-season and career assists. During his time at OU, he helped the Golden Grizzlies earn a spot in the 2010 Summit League Tournament, the first of two trips to the league tournament for the team in the last three seasons.

A solid defensive player he logged 132 assists in his final season, which continues to rank fourth-best in school history. Jarrad also excelled in the classroom as a two-time Summit League All-Academic Team selection.

"I couldn't be more excited for DJ," said Oakland head coach John Musachio. "He was an outstanding player and leader for us. He is very deserving of this opportunity with Great Falls and with the White Sox organization."

After graduating from Oakland, Jarrad played for the Coachella Valley Snowbirds in the California Winter League. He then signed a free agent contract to join the White Sox for spring training and remained with the team for extended spring training after the start of the MLB season.

"I feel like a freshman again," said Jarrad. "I've learned so much in the short time I've been with the team. Coach Musachio told me that pro ball was very different and he was right. I came out of Oakland prepared to face new challenges and also ready to learn. That mentality has helped me to get better every day."

The Voyagers will begin their season on June 18th.
