ROCHESTER, Mich. – Senior Aaron Wick threw a complete game and senior D.J. Jarrad went 3-for-3 to lead Oakland University (13-27, 6-14) to a 6-4 win over Oral Roberts (25-18, 14-6) in the final game of their Summit League series on Sunday at the OU Baseball Field. It was Senior Day for the Golden Grizzlies and the OU seniors scored five of the six runs.
“It was a great win against a tough opponent,” said head coach John Musachio. “Every one of our seniors stepped it up today. I am really proud of the effort that everyone on the team put forth today and I am glad that we could get this win for our seniors.”
Senior right fielder Dan Gliot preserved a 5-4 Oakland lead in the eighth inning. Pinch runner Graham McIntyre tried to go from first to third on a single to right field, but Gliot gave a perfect throw to senior Tommy Jablonski who applied the tag. Wick responded by striking out Bennett Pickar to end the inning.
Oakland senior Eric Ogg scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to add a valuable insurance run. After a leadoff single, Ogg eventually came in to score on a sacrifice fly by senior Ryan Waldhart. The Golden Grizzlies had three sacrifice flies on Sunday.
Wick (4-6) picked up his team-leading fourth win of the year, scattering 11 hits for just four runs and striking out two batters. It is the second nine-inning complete game of the season for the OU pitcher, who has four complete games in his career.
Oakland erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the first inning when junior Tim Ryan came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Waldhart. Jarrad then gave OU the lead by scoring on a wild pitch.
Gliot beat out an infield single in the second inning and later stole third before coming in to score on a sacrifice fly by Ogg. In the third inning, Wick helped himself with an RBI-single to score Jablonski. Junior Aaron Cieslak singled to drive in Waldhart, giving OU a 5-1 lead.
Oral Roberts rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to cut the Oakland lead to 5-4. Joey Winiecki had the key hit with a two-RBI single, but Wick was able to get Brandon King to ground out to end the inning.
Oakland had 11 hits including three from Jarrad. Wick was 2-for-5 at plate to help his own cause. Seniors Jablonski, Waldhart, Gliot and Ogg each added one hit each, while Waldhart led the Golden Grizzlies with two RBIs.
Chris Elder was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead ORU. Schlehuber, King and Nick Baligod each went 2-for-4. Alec Smith (2-1) suffered the loss for Oral Roberts after allowing five runs in his two-plus innings of work.
It was only the fourth time that Oakland has defeated Oral Roberts since joining division I. Oral Roberts leads the all-time series 49-4.
The Golden Grizzlies play their final home game on Tuesday. Oakland will host Toledo at the OU Baseball Field at 3 p.m.
