Pitching Leads Oakland to Split in Series at Fort Wayne

April 21, 2013

Box Score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Right-handed pitchers Tim Koons (3-5) and Chris Van Dyke (3-2) threw strong games and Robby Enslen went 3-for-8, with four runs batted in, to lead Oakland (9-25, 4-6) to consecutive wins over Fort Wayne (17-18, 5-7), 5-0 and 9-1, on Sunday at Mastodon Field. Van Dyke struck out a career-best 13 in 5.0 innings, while Koons tossed his first complete-game shutout.

"We had a lot of quality at bats from the fifth inning of the second game of this series," said OU coach John Musachio. "Today, in games three and four, our hitters really put a lot of pressure on their pitchers, both on the bases and at the plate. We got two great starting pitching efforts by Tim (Koons)and Chris (Van Dyke). They were both tremendous."

The Golden Grizzlies and Mastodons completed game two of the series this morning as well, with IPFW holding on for a 5-4 win. The two teams split the four-game series and the Grizzlies ended their seven-game losing streak.

Koons allowed just three hits in the opener, striking out seven and walking two. Van Dyke did not allow an earned run in the final game, giving up four hits. He also went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the opener.

Trent Drumheller went 2-for-3, with two walks, two runs scored, and Spencer Marentette went 1-for-3, driving in two runs to lead OU in game two. Connor Mielock added two RBIs and Nolan Jacoby scored three times.

In the opener, Koons was the story, limiting the Mastodons to just three hits. With a 1-0 lead, the Golden Grizzlies broke the game open with three runs in the third inning. After Enslen drove in his second run of the game, Van Dyke homered with two outs to give OU a 4-0 lead.

The nightcap was another excellent pitching performance for Oakland. Van Dyke recorded 13 of his 15 outs by strikeout. Right-handed pitchers Jonah Lakatos (1.0), Joe Buchalski (2.0) and Russell Luxton Jr. (1.0) combined to hold IPFW scoreless over the final four innings.

The Golden Grizzlies wasted little time scoring in the final game of the series, pushing four runs across in the top of the first inning. Jacoby and Enslen each drove in runs, while Marentette had a two-out, two-RBI single for OU.

The lead jumped to 9-1 in the ninth inning with four more runs for the Grizzlies. Mielock singled up the middle to score two runs, while Brett Impemba also drove in a run to give the Grizzlies an eight-run lead.

The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Brookings, S.D. for a Summit League four-game series this Friday-Sunday, April 26-28.
