Oakland Bats Still Cold at No. 17 Ole Miss, 10-2

OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore catcher John Estes went 2-for-4, with one RBI, while junior first baseman Aaron Wick finished 1-for-3, with one RBI, but No. 17 Mississippi (5-1) scored seven runs in the first five innings to upend Oakland University (0-2), 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

"I am proud of the effort given today by our young men," said OU coach John Musachio. "I thought we played a better baseball game today. Our goal is to commit to steady improvement."

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Teague (0-1) tossed 5.0 innings, giving up five hits, seven runs, six earned runs and struck out four. His counterpart RHP Aaron Barrett (2-0) worked 6.0 strong innings, allowing just two hits, one run and fanned seven OU batters.

Ole Miss' Zach Miller drove in a game-high four runs, smacking a two-run home run and finished 1-for-3. Matt Smith went 2-for-4, with three runs scored.

The Rebels took a commanding 4-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning after back-to-back doubles and two ground balls with runners on third base.

The Golden Grizzlies cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with a run. Sophomore center fielder Tim Ryan walked, stole second and advanced to third base on a single by junior second baseman Tommy Jablonski. Ryan would score on a single by Estes as OU trailed by three, 4-1.

Ole Miss used the long ball to extend the lead to 7-1, thanks to a solo home run in the fourth inning by Mike Snyder and a two-run blast from Miller in the fifth inning.

The Rebels would add two more runs in the seventh inning on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Miller and David Phillps. Oakland scored its final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning as freshman designated hitter Mike Carson scored from second on a single by Wick as the score advanced to 9-2.

 

 

Ole Miss posted the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Alex Yarbrough scored on a single by Smith as the Rebels finished with an eight-run victory over the Golden Grizzlies.
