Oakland Adds Two to Baseball Staff

Tim Penz and Damon Lessler will join the OU Baseball team for the 2011-12 season.

Matt Plante begins his second year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on the Oakland University baseball staff since joining the team in 2010. In addition to his duties as the recruiting coordinator, Plante works primarily with the OU batters and infielders.

In his first season at Oakland Plante helped mentor a pair of first team All-Summit League selections, in Tommy Jablonski and Ryan Waldhardt. The team also posted a .966 fielding percentage, which ranked as the best mark in school history during the division I era.

Plante also played a key role in helping Oakland bring in 12 recruits for the 2011-12 season. The group also included a pair of players that were both selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. It is the first time that OU has had two incoming freshman players drafted.

"We are very fortunate to have a coach with Matt's energy and knowledge join our program," said Musachio. "I have known Matt for a long time and I am thrilled he has joined our staff."

Plante comes to Oakland after serving for a year as a volunteer assistant coach and graduate manager at Kansas State. With the Wildcats he served as the head of video operations and also assisted with hitting and infield instruction. KSU finished the year 35-18 and were third in the Big XII conference earning a trip to the NCAA Regional and a top-25 national ranking.

Prior to his time with Kansas State, Plante worked as an assistant coach and PEAC skill instructor with Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. In addition to his duties of coaching the sub-varsity team, he was also in charge of coaching hitting and infield for the varsity squad, which finished as runner-up in conference play during the 2008 season.

In addition to his collegiate work, Plante has experience coaching at the youth level. He served as a head coach for the under-17 and under-18 teams with the Top Tier Elite Amateur Illinois Baseball Program. He was also an Associate Director of Baseball Operations and coached an under-12 team with the Full Package Athletics/Slammers Baseball Academy. He also worked as an assistant coach for Lake Forest High School in suburban Chicago.

Plante was a standout baseball and soccer player at Endicott College (Division III) in Massachusetts, where he graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in sports management. He had a career batting average above .300 and finished his senior season hitting .351. He helped lead Endicott to a Commonwealth Coast Conference title and an NCAA Regional during his time there. He later earned a master's degree in education from Springfield College and a graduate certificate in conflict resolution while at K-State.
