Katona, Hartman Pace Oakland at GVSU Holiday Open

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Alex Katona won the 800-meter run and Katelynne Hartman set a school record in the shot put as the Oakland men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open Friday evening. "This was a good day for us as we had some real nice early season performances," said head coach Paul Rice. "The track at Grand Valley always lends itself to fast times and it was nice to see the throwers get their first meet under their belt." Hartmann finished in second place in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet 11.5 inches which broke her own record from last year by over two feet. Micah Jones placed second in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet seven inches and finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of five feet five and three-quarters inches.
Top performances from the OU women's team include a third place finish by Cady Pozolo and a fifth place finish by Donna Ellithorpe in the 600-meter run with times of 1:42.32 and 1:45.03 respectively. Jami Rodes finished eighth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:58.17 and the team of Desiree Pettiford, Breanna Peabody, Pozolo and Ellithorpe finished sixth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:06.46.
Katona won his second straight 800-meter run as he finished with a time of 1:56.22 while Spencer Britt finished third in the event with a time of 1:56.90. Kyle Wilson earned a top-five finish in the 400-meter dash finishing with a time of 49.64. Other top performances by the men's team include a sixth place finish by Niklas Rippon in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.56, David Magnotte finishing eighth in the one mile run with a time of 4:21.44 and a 10th place finish by Philip Palomino in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:11.05. The 4x400-meter relay team of Britt, Katona, Magnotte and Wilson finished with a time of 3:24.80, good for a sixth place finish. "We will get a little down time for a week or two and then really get back at it in January," added Rice. Oakland will be in action on Jan. 13 as they travel to Central Michigan to compete in the Chip Invite in Mount Pleasant, Mich. -OAKLAND- |
