Jones Siblings Lead Golden Grizzlies at Falcon Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Zack Jones placed fourth overall with a time of 24:39.3 in the 8K event and sophomore Lia Jones placed second overall with a time of 21:56.1 in the 6K event to help lead the Oakland University men's and women's cross country teams at the Falcon Invitational Saturday morning. The men's team finished in third place with 122 points behind Kent State University who won with 39 points and Malone University with 61 points. The Golden Grizzlies received top-30 performances from senior Jason Bigelow with a 21st place finish (25:39.2), freshman Philip Palomino who placed 29th (25:53.5) and senior Ross Solanskey with a 30th place finish (25:53.6). "We stumbled just a bit on the men's side," said coach Paul Rice. "But at the same time had a few individuals really step up and race well. In particular, two of our seniors, Jason Bigelow and Michael Flemming, really put together nice races today." The women's team finished in fourth place with 109 points behind first place Bowling Green University with 55 points and Kent State University with 61 points. OU had two girls in the top five with Jones and junior Kelsey Carmean with a fourth place finish with a time of 22:24.5. Other notable Golden Grizzlies include senior Sara Lieblein with a 14th place finish (22:46.6) and sophomore Jami Rodes in 41st (23:33.0).
"It was an overall good day for the women," said Rice. "We ran really well up front and if we can shorten that gap from our third to fourth runner, we could have a real good day at the league meet in two weeks." This was the last regular season event for the Golden Grizzlies. Their next event will be The Summit League Championship in Cedar, City Utah. "We have two weeks to work out the kinks and get everyone tuned up for the big trip to Southern Utah for the league championship, said Rice. The meet is scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. start local time.
