CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I Rankings SOMERS, Wis. - The Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams both jumped into the top-10 in the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Poll as the men's team moved up seven spots to finish seventh and the women moved up five spots finishing eighth in the second poll of the season. "I think it is a reflection of our performances both at the EMU Invite and at the US Long Course Nationals," said head coach Pete Hovland. "There are some very formidable teams with us in the top 10 so we are in some good company. Hopefully we will close the gap even more when the next rankings come out in February." The men finished with 231.66 points to rank seventh in the dual meet rankings, up 17.83 points from the last poll on Nov. 21. Placing first in the poll was Princeton with 251.35 points followed by UC-Santa Barbara with 243.23 points and Navy with 242.13. Summit League opponents South Dakota State and IUPUI were ranked as the Jackrabbits finished 25th in the poll with 205.97 points while IUPUI also received consideration. The women reached the eighth place spot after earning 243.82 points, a 19.10 increase from the Nov. 21 poll. San Jose State earned the top spot on the women's side with 256.61 points followed by Harvard with 253.83 and Miami (Ohio) with 253.00 points. Summit League opponents South Dakota State and IUPUI both received consideration into the top-25.
Now in its 10th year, the Mid-Major Rankings serve to provide an objective point system to compare teams' relative strength in a traditional dual meet lineup. The ranking is available to those institutions that a) are not members of a BCS conference or Mountain West Conference, or b) provide fewer than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules.
The Oakland swimming and diving teams will not be in action until 2012 when the women take on Akron on Jan. 7 at Ocasek Natatorium. Both teams will return to the pool on Jan. 14 as they host Cleveland State and Xavier in the OU Aquatics Center. -OAKLAND- |
