Oakland University???s men???s swimming and diving team had their season debut on Saturday while the women were in action for the second time in 2004-05. Both teams played host to the annual Quadrangular meet with Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Akron???s women, and Wayne State competing against the Golden Grizzlies. Both teams swept the competition in the dual meet format. Highlighting the meet for the men was freshman Ryan Kish
(Rockford, Mich.) who came away with a pair of first place finishes in the diving events.
???I think we swam well today and I???m pleased with this first meet,??? head coach Pete Hovland
said. ???We lost a lot of leadership and talent last year due to graduation, but the team has done well and responded well today after our toughest week of work thus far.???
In head-to-head competition, Oakland???s men???s squad defeated Wayne State (154-85) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (148.5-93.5). On the women???s side, the Golden Grizzlies edged Akron (135-108), Wayne State (191-52) and UWM (170-73).
Both OU???s men???s and women???s Team A 400-yard medley relay teams came out on top with the women finishing in 3:57.97 and the men touching in at 3:32.22. The women???s 400-yard freestyle relay Team A edged the field at 3:35.72, while the men???s Team A came in second in the same event at 3:15.13.
For the men, Eric Lynn
(Plymouth, Mich.) sped past the rest of the field in the 50-yard freestyle event at 21.91. The Golden Grizzlies went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard individual medley in the following order: Blaine Dolcetti
(Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) 1:57.44, Zoltan Horvath
(Balatonalmadi, Hungary) 1:58.06 and Nick McCollum
(Fairfield, Ohio) 1:58.08. Also finishing 1-2-3 was the OU men???s three-meter diving team: Kish 242.55, John VanPortfleet
(Grand Rapids, Mich.) 193.80 and Brent Maghielse
(Rockford, Mich.) 189.85.
In the men???s one-meter diving event, VanPortfleet scored second just behind Kish with 233.90 points. Dolcetti took home first in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:56.99 and the Tansel
duo of Bryon
(Dundee, Mich.) came in first and second in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.03 and 49.46, respectively. McCollum edged the field in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the pad at 1:55.91. Finishing out the first-place times is Horvath who breezed by the competition in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:04.76, more than 10 seconds faster than the next participant.
The Golden Grizzlies are on the road for the month of November, first heading to Wright State Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6, for a dual meet with the Raiders.
