ROCHESTER, Mich. - Jorden Merrilees won the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200 backstroke while three other Golden Grizzlies won events as the Oakland men's swimming and diving team lost to Notre Dame with a score of 191-107 Friday evening inside the OU Aquatic Center.
"I thought we swam well in a number of spots today and competed well against a very deep Notre Dame team," said head coach Pete Hovland. "Jorden (Merrilees) impresses me every single time he jumps into the pool and really I'm pleased with how all our freshman competed."
Merrilees won the 1,000 free with a time of 9:24.15 and the 200 back with a time of 1:50.86. He also finished runner-up in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:00.88, closing the gap with a final 50-yard split time of 25.03. Alex Aceino won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.50 and Amr el Sayed won the 500 free with a time of 4:37.29. The Golden Grizzlies went first and second in the 100 backstroke with Anders Jensen winning with a time of 50.66 and Grant Harding touching the wall at 50.78.
"I thought Alex (Aceino) had a great meet as all of his work over the summer to make it to the Olympic trials is paying off and Amr (el Sayed) and some quality swims as well," added Hovland.
Oakland will be in the pool tomorrow as both teams host Wayne State starting at 1 p.m. in the OU Aquatic Center. The 2011-12 Summit League Championship teams will be honored before the meet with a presentation of their championship rings.
