The 1990-91 women's swimming and diving team had one of the most spectacular swim seasons in program history. After falling to Michigan in the opening dual meet of the season, Oakland won 11 consecutive meets, including wins over Division I schools Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan and Michigan State. OU went on to win the GLIAC Championship and second consecutive national championship, scoring 566.5 points at nationals, 160 more than runner-up Florida Atlantic. A total of 19 of 25 women's swimmers qualified and participated in the NCAA Championship meet, with 18 of those 19 earning All-America honors. Winning individual national titles for the Pioneers were Lisa Guilfoyle who captured the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and set new school records in both. OU also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays as Guilfoyle, Kerry Leavoy, Dana Kennedy and Lyn Schermer swam in both of those relay events. The 566.5 points set at the 1991 meet was an NCAA record. |
