Debby Nickels Jewell led Oakland to back-to-back national championships in 1993 and '94. A two-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) champion in the 1650-yard freestyle, Nickels won an individual national title in the mile during the 1994 season.

Despite missing the entire 1994-95 season due to a shoulder injury, Nickels was able to qualify for the NCAA Championships and score points in the 500 free and 400 individual medley. She finished her career as an eight-time All-American and as a multiple Academic All-American. She became the first sophomore captain in program history and held the school record in the 1650 free until 2001 after Oakland made the transition to Division I.

That time continues to rank inside the top five in program history and she also sits inside the top 10 in the 1000 free. Nickels earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in communication and received a master's degree in elementary education from OU.
