Paul Karas was Oakland University's first national champion. He won the 500 freestyle in 1973-74 and the 200 yard butterfly in 1975-76. A 20-time All-American, he held nine school records upon graduation and was a top point scorer for Oakland University at the NCAA Division II championships four straight years.

Karas was co-captain of the swimming team in 1977. Karas was also active as an Area Hall Council member and received several scholarships, including the prestigious Student Life Award.
