NCAA SELF-STUDY CERTIFICATION

MINUTES OF EQUITY AND WELFARE SUBCOMMITTEE

DECEMBER 11, 2002, 3:00 P.M.

Present:          Glenn McIntosh, Dawn Aubry, Brian Bouwman, Helen Ellison, Terri Eudy, Amy Hirschman, Peter Hovland, Bozenna Johnson, Karen Lloyd, Peter Nacy, Katherine Rowley, Gail Ryckman, Gloria Sosa, Jane Bentham, Jack Mehl, Denise McGee

Glenn McIntosh thanked everyone for attending and congratulated Pete Hovland, Swimming Coach, for the recent Mid-Continent Conference Championships won by the men’s and women’s swimming teams.  Glenn asked if the sub subcommittees needed any help in their data collection.

Karen Lloyd, Welfare and Sportsmanship - Have met twice and also with Tracy and they are on track with resources, data collection and compilation.  Tracy also gave them Eastern Michigan website to look at their self-study report.

Helen Ellison and Gail Ryckman, Minority Issues - Have gathered information from payroll and would like a list from athletics to determine if their reports are consistent with members of the athletics staff and graduate assistants employed during this time frame.  Also, information on professional development can be obtained from Tracy.  Under this same sub subcommittee, Gloria Sosa and Brian Bouwman are looking at student issues.

Teri Eudy and Amy Hirschman, Gender Issues - Have met with Tracy and Glenn for information.  A tour of the facility will be taken as it relates to gender in locker rooms, office, etc.  EADA reports were reviewed.  Information coming from the Title IX Committee will also be included in their data collection and well as information from the Senate Athletics Committee.

Jack Mehl asked about looking into various reasons for reduction in financial aid and asking Michelle Piskulich about recent student needs assessment surveys.

The sub subcommittees were asked to outline their various responsibilities and make a list of contacts they wish to pursue.  E-mail that list to Jane Bentham for compilation and she will then send the list to all members of the subcommittee so that duplication can be avoided for data collection.

The next meeting of the Equity and Welfare Subcommittee will be the week of January 13.
