UNIVERSITY NCAA SELF-STUDY CERTIFICATION MINUTES OF THE EQUITY AND WELFARE SUBCOMMITTEE OCTOBER 21, 2003, 2:00 P.M. Present:

Zambardi introduced Joi Cunningham, Director of Diversity and Compliance and Pam
Heatlie, Interim Director of Diversity and Compliance. Jack
Mehl explained that the Steering Committee had met and determined that each of
the subcommittees would meet to review the report as submitted to the NCAA.
He also mentioned that if the media approaches any subcommittee member,
those questions could be directed to the subcommittee chair. Glenn
McIntosh will represented the subcommittee for the cable TV show and town hall
meeting which will be scheduled the week of November 17. The
five plans as submitted by the subcommittee were discussed and clarified.
Jack Mehl will discuss the plans with President Russi. Plan
#5 - Gender Equity Plan - the under representation of female coaches concern
noted by the plan was discussed. Plan
#6 - Adoption of Minority Opportunity Plan - the under representation of
minority staff noted by the plan was discussed. It was also noted that the move from Division II to Division
I has had a significant impact on the ability to recruit minority athletes. Plan
#7 - Procedures for Addressing Sexual Orientation Issues - the perception that
student-athletes are not comfortable discussing sexual orientation issues was
discussed, but it was noted that there are many programs on campus where
students can get information and assistance. Plan
#8 - The need to reduce procedures for student-athlete health related issues to
writing was discussed and clarified that the issue was the consolidation of
relevant information into the student-athlete and team handbooks. Plan
#9 - The proportionality of female to male physicians on the Sports Medicine
staff was discussed, and it was noted that the Athletics Department now has an
OB-GYN doctor on a consulting and resource basis as needed. |
