NCAA SELF-STUDY CERTIFICATION

MINUTES OF THE EQUITY AND WELFARE SUBCOMMITTEE

JUNE 5, 2003, 10:00 A.M.

Present:          Glenn McIntosh, Brian Bouwman, Helen Ellison, Terri Eudy, Thomas Ford, Peter Hovland, Karen Lloyd, Gloria Sosa, Tracy Huth, Jane Bentham

Glenn McIntosh thanked everyone for their participation on the Equity and Welfare Subcommittee and noted that the draft report has been read once by the reading team and is in the process of being finalized.  The appendices have been compiled for the final draft report.  Glenn then asked for feedback from the sub subcommittees on the process.

Helen Ellison, Minority Issues, enjoyed the process and their sub subcommittee developed a strong plan concerning diversity for the report.  Gloria Sosa reported that  “Safe Zone,” a program that will train staff and students to be sensitive to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) issues, will commence in the fall.  This program will help to increase awareness and support for GLBT athletes.

Karen Lloyd, Sportsmanship and Welfare, stated that the process was interesting and helpful in gaining new insight about athletics.  The biggest issue in her report concerned sexual orientation and the recommendations made concerning more female coaches as well as a doctor specifically for female issues.  Karen’s sub subcommittee is also recommending standardization of the sports handbooks in specific areas.

Brian Bouwman found the distribution of scholarships enlightening.

Teri Eudy, Gender Issues, noted that their sub subcommittee has made suggestions concerning gender issues.
