NCAA SELF-STUDY CERTIFICATION

MINUTES OF THE ACADEMIC INTEGRITY SUBCOMMITTEE

JANUARY 16, 2003, 8:30 A.M.

Present:            Michelle Piskulich, Patrick Bennett, Brian Bouwman, Charles Clark, Spencer Hynes, Keith Merritt, Pete Nacy, Taeko Yokoyama, Robert Taylor, Jane Bentham

Reports were given by individuals responsible for various components of Operating Principles 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3.

2.3 Scheduling - Michelle Piskulich, Eric Stephen and Keith Merritt in their pursuit of information regarding scheduling noted that there was no missed class policy and inquired as to which committee of the university should be approached to draft a missed class policy for all students.  There is an unwritten rule in Athletics that 3-5 missed classes should be the limit.  There is a form sent to faculty about missed classes and it is voluntary with about 30% being returned.  Academic Skills Center is in the process of developing a form of missed class reporting for all students.

2.2 Academic Support - Keith Merritt and Pat Bennett distributed information answering all questions and any information not available, will be forthcoming.  Keith is working with other advising units of campus to present a flow chart.  Michelle is going to check with Student Affairs on how often the academic support area is evaluated.  Charles Clark responded that the tutoring aspect of academic support is evaluated every year.

2.1 Academic Standards - Craig Taylor, Pete Nacy and Brian Bouwman responded to the various questions outline in this principle.  Craig distributed a handout explaining admissions requirements and formal request for any special admit.  There are many procedures, especially for student-athletes, for special admission.  Many times the coach will notify Admissions that special tutoring is being done before that student is finally admitted. The final determination for any special admit will be made by the Director of Admissions.

Pete Nacy reported that standardized test scores are not used in admitting any student, however, international students are different and an agency evaluates transcripts before they are admitted.  He will collect data to answer the Attachment No. 1 in the Self-Study Instrument.

Brian Bouwman commented on the Special Admissions policy and how transfer students are admitted

Jenny Gilroy and Keith Merritt distributed information on initial eligibility for transfer student-athletes and how student-athletes’ continuing eligibility is tracked.

Taeko Yokoyama and Laura Schartman distributed information on the graduation rates of student-athletes as it compares to the general student population.

The subcommittee is in the process of obtaining all handbooks, catalog and all other data as required in Operating Principle 2.1.

Michelle Piskulich will begin compiling data for a preliminary report and asked committee members to e-mail their information to her.  The next meeting of the Academic Integrity Subcommittee will be in February.
