The year 2002 marks the 20th anniversary of the 1982
women's basketball season. This year also marks the anniversary of the first-ever women's
basketball appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
At the culmination of the 1981-82 season, the Pioneers went
2-2 in tournament play. Oakland opened up with a 77-75 victory over Northern Kentucky and
followed with a 73-61 win over Chapman. OU was defeated in its final two games of the
season giving the Pioneers a Fourth in the Nation finish.
This extremely talented group of 13 women still hold four
school records -- rebounds 1474, blocked shots 175, consecutive wins 20 and wins 27. Three
members of the 1982 team currently appear in the single-season record book -- Linda
Krawford (7 times), Brenda McLean (2 times), Gwen Browner (2 times).
The 1982 team finished 27-5 overall and 14-0 in the Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The 14-0 record earned OU the GLIAC title and
marked the first time in school history that a team would go undefeated in conference
play.
The immeasurable season was highlighted by victories over
Michigan State, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Bowling Green and
Detroit. |
