In the fall of 1964 the call went out to students at Oakland University to form a men's swimming and diving team. Not only did those that answered the call form the first swimming and diving team at OU, it also paved the way for the entire future of Oakland athletics as the first varsity sport at the school.

On December 12, 1964 history was made as the new Oakland team hosted Schoolcraft College in the first varsity athletics event in OU history. Oakland defeated Schoolcraft that day and went on to post a 6-2-1 record for the season.

That historic first win not only marked the birth of Oakland University's athletics program, it also paved the way for one of the most successful swimming and diving programs in the nation. In five short seasons the program placed for the first time at the national championship meet before going on to win every conference championship in which it competed as well as claiming five NCAA national championships.
