Dr. Joe Guettler is board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine and enters his second season as Head Team Physician for Oakland Athletics.

Dr. Guettler was a four-year Division I Wrestler at Valparaiso University and graduated with his B.S. in 1992. He then earned his medical degree from Northwestern University in 1996 and completed a Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Beaumont Hospital in 2001. He subsequently served as Sports Medicine Fellow at Duke University from 2001 to 2002.

Dr. Guettler currently practices orthopedic sports medicine out of Performance Orthopedics in Bingham Farms and Beaumont Hospital. He specializes in minimally invasive cartilage, ligament, and tendon repair involving the shoulder, elbow, and knee. He also has special interests and expertise in the treatment of sports medicine problems in adolescent and female athletes.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Guettler is very active in teaching and research. He has served as President of the Detroit Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and President of the Michigan Orthopedic Society. He also serves on the Education and Research Boards of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. At Oakland University, he serves on the Board of Visitors for the School of Health Sciences, and is an Associate Clinical Professor through both the School of Health Sciences and the Medical School.

Dr. Guettler has worked with a variety of high school, collegiate, and professional teams over the years. He currently works with Oakland University, the Michigan Bucks, and a number of local high schools, youth leagues, and semi-pro organizations.
