Alexis DeCapua joined Oakland as the head dance coach beginning in the 2011-12 season. She brings more than 10 years of dance experience to the position, having been an educator, professional dancer and choreographer. DeCapua has danced professionally as captain and choreographer for the Detroit Piston's Automotion Dance Team, as a member of the MoreDances Contemporary Dance Company, a guest artist for the Michigan Opera Theatre and Eisenhower Dance Ensemble. She served as company manager at the Eisenhower Dance Enseble for three years, in addition to her performances for MGM Casino in Detroit and Caeser's Windsor Casino. Her international experience also includes being chosen with an elite group of pro-dancers to perform for the NBA/ESPN tour of Puerto Rico. DeCapua was named Most Valuable Coach, as voted by her peers at the Universal Dance Association in both 2007 and 2008. She has choreographed for over 40 different organizations including the Detroit NBA and WNBA dance teams, college teams and more. She has received over 20 choreographic awards including the Maggie Allesee award in choreographic achievement, as well as awards from Universal Dance Association, Starpower Talent and the National Dance Alliance. As a professor of dance and director of the collegiate dance team at Oakland University, DeCapua emphasizes athleticism and physical fitness. She is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and is trained in STOTT Pilates reformer courses, is an instructor in Zumba Fitness. In addition to her professional experience she earned a master's degree in education from Michigan State University with a concentration in sports, leadership, coaching and technology. DeCapua also studied dance at MSU, before traveling to the Lorenzo De Medici in Italy and studying on full-merit scholarship at the Giordano Dance Center in Evanston, Ill. She is currently a full-time dance educator at Detroit Country Day Schools as well as guest lecturer in dance at Oakland University where she graduated with honors, earning her bachelor's degree in dance. -OAKLAND- |
