Oakland Excels Academically during Winter Term|

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Among Oakland's 18 intercollegiate teams, a total of 215 student-athletes attained the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academic honors for the Winter 2012 semester as announced by the athletic department on Wednesday. The total student-athlete grade point average (GPA) for the Winter term was a 3.09.
Oakland recognizes all student-athletes who meet an average 3.0 GPA or higher with the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics award. The 215 Golden Grizzlies make up 68 percent of the student-athlete population at Oakland. Seven student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA while taking between 12 and 16 credit hours: Spencer Marentette (Baseball, Busniess), Ashleigh Slemmer (Volleyball, Business), Jocelyn Odom (Swim/Dive, Health Sciences), Caymen Novak (Track, Engineering), Lia Jones (Track/CC, Health Sciences), Alanna Gerber (Golf, Elementary Education), and Julianne Boyle (Soccer, Engineering Biology).
Of the 18 intercollegiate teams at Oakland, nine achieved a team average above 3.0 during the Winter 2012 semester. The top teams in overall GPA included Volleyball, earning the highest GPA with a 3.59, and Men's Golf earning the second highest GPA with a 3.24.
In the Winter/Spring, the Golden Grizzlies led the way with a conference-best 156 selections to the Academic All-Summit League squad, surpassing South Dakota State with 152 recipients. Oakland topped the league in both the fall and winter/spring seasons, compiling a league-best total of 218 Scholar Athletes. The women's soccer team contributed the most student-athletes to the Academic All-Summit League list with 25, while baseball contributed 24 and men's swimming and diving added 23. In total, 58 Golden Grizzlies earned the Summit League Distinguished Scholar award by earning a 3.6 GPA or higher.
