Oakland Raises Over $2,100 and 175 Pounds of Food in Summit League Food Fight

Jan. 21, 2010

ROCHESTER, Mich. – As part of the 2010 Summit League Food Fight, the Oakland University Department of Athletics raised over $2,100 in its coin race fundraiser, in which Oakland’s 18 varsity teams competed against each other to see who could donate the most money over the course of two weeks. In addition, the Golden Grizzlies also collected 175 pounds of food for families in need.

“I am extremely proud of our student-athletes who truly drove this community service effort,” said Holly Kerster, Assistant Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Services. “They are providing hundreds of families in the area with food during a time when so many people are in need of assistance. We are consistently pressing the importance of involvement in our surrounding community and this is just one example of how our student-athletes exceed our high expectations of them.”

The women’s swimming and diving team won the coin race, earning $593, while the men’s swimming and diving team was the runner-up with $472 earned.

In addition to the student-athletes, coaches and staff, contributions were also made by community members, the Professional Advisors Committee, residents of North Hamlin Hall and the MSU Credit Union.
