Paul Smith enters his first year as the
Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at Oakland University,
having been named to the position on November 19, 2007.
A 2003 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello and native of Flint, Smith served as a student assistant in the UAM Sports Information office from 1998-2001, and was named Interim Sports Information Director on January 1, 2002. At the time, Smith was the youngest Sports Information Director in the country at the age of 21. In August 2002, Smith was tabbed as an intern assistant to UAM Director of Athletics Alvy Early, and also directed the efforts of the UAM Radio Network, responsible for producing radio broadcasts for all University of Arkansas at Monticello sports. After graduation, Smith was named Assistant Sports Information Director at Division I Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi - a post he held for three weeks before being promoted to Interim Sports Information Director, becoming one of the youngest Division I Sports Information Directors in the nation at the age of 23. Smith also served as the Sports Information Director at Delta State University, where he served as media coordinator for the 2004 NCAA South Central Baseball Regional tournament, and oversaw the promotion of the 2004 Delta State University Statesmen national champion baseball team. After departing Delta State, Smith spent three years as the Sports Information Director at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, promoting ten Division II sports, including NCAA tournament qualifiers in softball and men's basketball. Smith has served as the coordinator for several regional and national awards, serving as the coordinator for the ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region and All-America baseball teams in 2004; and serving as the Division II Southeast Region coordinator for Don Hansen's Football Gazette since 2005. In July 2004, Smith was elected to a two-year term as Vice President of Phi Lambda Chi National Fraternity. He was re-elected in July 2006 and now serves as Phi Lambda Chi's National Secretary and webmaster. Smith, 27, is married to the former to Stacy Gregory of Warren. The couple resides in Washington Township. |
