Student Athletic Trainers
Student
athletic trainers may be assigned to a team and/or work in the Athletic
Training Room. They are an extension of the certified staff, and work under
the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Trainers.
Staff Responsibilities
The Athletic Trainer is
responsible for the care and prevention of athletic injuries, rendering
proper injury evaluation, first aid, and treatment and rehabilitation,
enabling your return to pre-injury level. The Athletic Trainer serves as a
liaison between the student athlete, coach and physician.
Medical
Eligibility
All
student-athletes who want to participate in intercollegiate athletics MUST
complete a comprehensive medical questionnaire and physical examination.
Approval must be obtained from the team physician before the athlete is
allowed to participate in any athletic event. The team physician may
reexamine and change the student-athlete eligibility status at any time.
Insurance
Coverage
An insurance
form will be sent to your parents or guardians to be completed as part of
your medical questionnaire. Failure to complete and return the form by the
request date will jeopardize you eligibility for athletic competition. A
photocopy of your insurance card (front and back) is needed for your file.
The insurance plan used by the Oakland University Athletic Department is to
be used as a supplement to your medical insurance coverage. Oakland
University will be the secondary carrier in all claims. If any portion of a
bill is not covered by your insurance, the Oakland University Athletic
Department plan will pay the balance. Under no circumstances will the
student-athlete or his or her family be expected to pay the entire injury
claim if done properly.
If you do not have
insurance coverage, we recommend that you carry accident/illness insurance
while attending the university. Student insurance is available through
Graham Health Center (370-2341) and can be obtained for a nominal fee. The
insurance will cover those illnesses/injuries not related to athletic
events. International students are required to carry medical insurance.
Medical Expense
Coverage
NCAA rules do
not permit intercollegiate athletic departments to cover any cost of
injuries that are not the direct result of sanctioned athletic events. The
following expenses are not covered by the Athletic Department:
*Medical services for
illness or injuries that are not athletic in nature;
*Medical services of insurance coverage for illness or injury after
completion of the student-athletes participation/eligibility. The Athletic
Department is not responsible for recurring injuries after release by
physician or department insurance expirations;
*Normal dental care such as treatments for cavities, cleaning, impaction,
wisdom teeth and correction of congenital defects;
*Contact lenses or glasses, unless specified by athletic participation by
the team physician and approved by the business manager;
*Immunizations or desensitization (allergy) injections;
*Injuries/illnesses that occur before enrolling at Oakland University
(preexisting);
*Injuries reported after seven days from the injury producing accident.

training room.

20.

Reporting an
injury
Report all
injuries immediately after practice (report to the coach if the athletic
trainer is not present). If an injury develops after athletic training room
hours, call your team’s athletic trainer or a Certified Athletic Trainer.
All injuries and illnesses must be reported to the training room staff by 10
a.m., failure to do so will prevent being excused from practice. Coaches
will be notified by 12:00 noon so that practice and game adjustments can be
made. If for some reason, you or a teammate requires emergency medical
treatment, call 911. Then notify your team’s athletic trainer, the Certified
Athletic Trainer, and your coach.
Treatment of
Injuries
No treatments
will be given during practice times; you are expected to be at all practices
and workouts. You are also expected to get as many treatments per day as
ordered by the team’s Certified Athletic Trainer. Schedule treatments or
rehabilitation through your team’s athletic trainer or the Certified
Athletic Trainer. If you cannot make a scheduled appointment, you must
contact your team’s athletic trainer or the Certified Athletic Trainer.
Failing to report for a scheduled treatment or rehabilitation session is the
same as failing to report for a practice or a contest. "No shows" will be
reported to the Head Athletic Trainer and the Head Coach, and proper
disciplinary actions will be taken.
Oakland University
Certified Athletic Trainers and Student Athletic Trainers will administer
all treatments.
Before each practice or
game, the Head Coach will be given a Coaches report from the athletic
trainer listing athletes who had treatment, rehabilitation, Doctor’s
appointments, etc., along with the status of the athletes (full go, no-go,
limited).
Practice
Policies for Injured or Ill Athletes
Everyone will
dress in full gear for practice unless excused beforehand by the Head Coach
and the Certified Athletic Trainer. If you are injured to the extent that
you cannot dress in full gear, or will be available only for limited work,
you will, nevertheless be required to report to all practices on time in the
gear suggested by the Certified Athletic Trainer. Injured athletes will be
assigned special exercises, running or calisthenics intended to speed up the
recovery time and maintain conditioning. These exercises can be done on the
field, in the pool, or on the court under the supervision of the athletic
trainer. Do not leave without permission from the athletic trainer. Failure
to complete assigned exercises, loafing or inactivity during practice time
will be reported to the coach for appropriate discipline.
Physician
Appointments
Only a Certified
Athletic Trainer can make an athlete’s Doctor appointment. The Certified
Athletic Trainer will refer you to the appropriate doctor if your case
warrants further treatment of examination. Please remember that the
Athletic Department will not assume responsibility for fees you incur with
outside physicians, dentists or health care facilities/providers unless the
sports medicine personnel have referred you to such services. Once
referred, athletes should report to a Certified Athletic Trainer for proper
paperwork for outside treatment of injuries of illness. It is also the
athlete’s responsibility to return the completed paperwork to the Athletic
Training Room. You must also receive permission for any follow-up visits or
second opinions, which are permitted and encouraged.
Athletes are responsible
for getting to and from Doctor’s appointments. Being late or missing a
Doctor’s appointment inconveniences all parties involved (coach, athlete,
athletic trainer and physician) and can cost the loss of physician services.
This will not be tolerated.
General practice, family
and orthopedic physicians come as needed, at least once weekly, to the
athletic training room.
Prescription
Authorization
If you are given
a prescription for an injury or illness suffered during a practice or game,
bring it to a Certified Athletic Trainer for authorization prior to having
it filled. If authorization is not received, the athlete will be responsible
for payment.
Release of
Medical Information
Release of
medical information is only done with your written consent, obtained as part
of your medical questionnaire, and kept on file by the sports medicine
staff.
Equipment and
Supplies
Modalities are
not to be used without the assistance of a sports medicine staff member.
Equipment and
supplies are to remain in the training room unless distributed by the sports
medicine personnel. Return all equipment that is checked out to you.
