| George Wibby has been an
institution at Oakland University for 20 years. His duties have ranged from contributor to
fund raiser to instructor to swimming starter to golf coach. George has done them all, and
with a strong devotion to Oakland. His service to the
university began when he and his wife, Jewell, were two of the early contributors who also
raise money for the athletic department. George has given thousands of dollars to the
athletic program, most of which has been donated to the Jewell Wibby Scholarship Fund,
created after his wifes untimely death. George, who coached golf at Oakland for six
years, also headed the Michigan Red Cross for a number of years and retired from that
organization after 50 years of service. He still serves as instructor in various Red Cross
areas. George is also still active at he university as a starter for swimming meets, as a
part-time employee at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course, and as assistant golf coach to head
man, Ken Allard.
In addition to his Oakland University activities, George is
the past president of the Michigan Swimming Officials Society, the Michigan AAU, was the
Michigan AAU Swimming chairman, and has been a Michigan High School Athletic Association
official for the past 37 years.
George has been a long-time caretaker of Oakland
University, especially its athletes, and he has been a father-image to many of us, young
and old. George represents what intercollegiate athletics is all about.
George has three children, Craig, Sue and Peggy. |
