During his seventeen years at Oakland University, Corey Van
Fleet compiled an outstanding record as both an administrator and a coach. Van Fleet
directed the mens swimming program to a level of excellence which brought national
recognition to the university. The Pioneer swimmers he coached never finished lower than
seventh in the NCAA II championships. His highest NCAA finish was second place in the
1978-79 national meet. Van Fleet produced 152 All-Americans in the 70's, In
addition, three of the swimmers he coached were recipients of the NCAA post-graduate
scholarships, attesting to the educational goals which he always stressed.
Van Fleet was Director of Athletics from 1972-82 and
initiated athletic scholarships, exercise physiology and cardiac rehabilitation programs,
the Oakland 100, the Pioneer Athletic Club, and was instrumental in setting up training
camp programs for the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Express. He played a
major role in the development of the Katke-Cousins Golf Course and supervised the early
growth of that facility. |
