Helen Shereda-Smith was Oakland University’s first women athlete to receive All-American honors. She finished her basketball career as the state of Michigan’s all-time leading scorer with 2,338 points and 1,524 rebounds. For three years, Helen held the top season scoring average in Michigan.

Helen scored a single game high of 43 points against Grand Valley State College on February 16, 1980, and set a state record of 28 rebounds against Lake Superior State College on February 4, 1978. At the conclusion of her career, she held school records for the most field goals in a game (19) and for most points (764), most field goals (303), most free throws (158) and best scoring average (27.3) per season.

Helen made the tournament team in every tournament that her team played in and was twice named National Player of the Week by the American Women’s Sports Foundation. She was a first-team All-Conference player four consecutive years, and was named Most Valuable Player in the Central Missouri State tournament, in which she broke all tournament records for scoring and rebounding.

In 1980, Helen was selected for the College Sports Information Directors of America All-American Team and the American Women’s Sports Foundation All-American Basketball team, and was a finalist for the United Foundation’s Sports Women of the Year. That same year, she was selected as the eighth player overall in the first round of the annual women’s basketball league draft and was offered a contract to play in Japan on the Toshiba Basketball Team. In 1979, she was named to the National Scouting Association’s All-American Select Team, and in 1977 was a participant on the United States’ 19 and under National Select Team, which traveled to Taipei and Taiwan.

In addition to her basketball honors, Helen was a volleyball participant for three years and a star on the softball team, twice winning All-Conference honors as a pitcher.
