| One of the driving forces behind
the success of the National Invitational Soccer Tournament, now called the Marriott Soccer
Classic, has been Mike Riley. For his work on the tournament committee, he is being
honored with the George Wibby Award. Now in his 21st
year at Oakland University, Mike has been involved with the soccer tournament since its
inception. Mike has taken on the difficult job of securing the referees for the youth
portion of the tournament, one of the key overall success of the weekend. He has organized
the recruitment, assignment, and payment of the officials, an invaluable service to the
committee and tournament. Mike is also a member of the Hall of Honor committee, and is a
big supporter of the athletic department.
Mike is a professor of biomedical sciences and an associate
professor of biological sciences at OU. He earned a bachelor of science and masters of
science at Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. from Liverpool University. His involvement
with youth soccer in this area led to his being the co-founder of the Rochester Youth
Soccer League in 1979.
Mike and his wife Stephanie, live in Rochester and have
four children-Christopher, Robert, Kirsten, and Stuart. |
